When I had realised that I could no longer recognise the person within, I took it back to God and shed some unwanted tears while listening to Whitney Houston: ‘I have nothing’ for probably 15 -20 minutes, before I actively decided to root my soul to becoming fresh like morning dew in the spring time.

I was brought up catholic, more spiritual than religious though, and I definitely acknowledge my African roots, all these co-exist in my space. I decided to fast. Instead of giving up something I decided to take something up that could comfort my soul, which was praying the rosary for 7 days. Honestly the fasting wasn’t bad at all because I knew the sacrifice was going to be worth it. I was very positive, and I think the fast was too, because I CRIED some nights. I let it all out! So all the bad was exiting my soul, and I was ready to be refilled with the good that was about to come straight into my heart, and mind to feed my soul.

You need to be able to forgive yourself, then respect the person you are becoming in order to love and accept yourself. Respect has to come before love, because if you respect something/someone there is care or love for it. There can be no darkness in your mind, soul and space. You need to see the glass, not your glass half full, but over flowing! Iyanla Vanzant termed this as being ‘self-full’.

Step 1 - FAST. If you would like to fast/ if you had to fast, what would you give up or take up to get you where you want to be? (Doesn’t have to be romantic, but maybe in your career/academics etc.).
